Chapter Five

H

alfhuman…who would have thought it? Since Miles was still unconscious, Ervin studied the other man closely, looking for anything that he’d missed that would have clued him in to the guy’s real heritage.

Sure, Miles was a bit on the short side, but so were the runts of the litter. So, it was easy to overlook that. Besides that and the fact that Miles could stand to gain a few pounds, he looked just like any other wolf. No, Miles looked way better than them. In fact, Ervin found himself hard pressed to recall anybody who’d come close to Miles.

Even covered in streaks of blood, with bruising and swelling all over his face, Miles was still breathtaking. Reaching out, Ervin ran the back of his fingers over Miles’s cheek, marveling at how smooth the skin felt. Usually, Ervin loved the rugged texture of a man who hadn’t shaved in a day, but he now found Miles’s smoothness a welcome change.

“ It’s because of his Native American genes,” Julia said as she walked over to the bedside.

“What is?” Ervin asked, still not looking up from Miles.

“The lack of facial hair. I’m willing to bet he only has to shave every few days.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, why do you think you’ve never seen a Native American with a beard?”

“I guess you have a point there. I didn’t even realize that was his heritage.”

Julia began to take some vitals. While most other medical facilities would have relied on a RN or nurse’s assistant for that kind of thing, Ervin knew that Julia liked to be involved in all aspects of her patients’ care.

“I’m not surprised. From the blood sample I took, I would guess that he’s at least a few generations removed. But, if you look at his high cheekbones, you can see that I’m right. I would be willing to bet that once we get him better and fed, he won’t be as pale, either.”

Ervin traced one of the cheekbones in question.“I just wish he would have come with me when I first asked him to. Then none of this would have happened.”

He wanted to kick himself for not getting to Miles quicker when the Ravens had attacked. While he and Nico had been watching the front door of the shop, they hadn’t had a clear view of the rear. So they hadn’t known Miles was in trouble until the screaming started. Even then, it’d taken them way too long to locate where all the sounds were coming from. Which had turned out to be plenty of time for the Ravens to inflict some pretty serious damage.

So caught up in his self-flagellation, he barely glanced up when Cassie and Chris came into the room. Even when they approached the bed, all Ervin felt capable of was the tiniest bow of his head.

Neither of them called him out on it. Cassie even walked over and put an arm around Ervin, giving him a supportive hug. He drank in the comfort. While she might be a Jaguar and a bit on the young side, he’d never seen a better leader.
